Discussion Points
Faults:
Produces code with a fair amount of unnecessary overhead and attempts to require use of FrontPagetm front ends. Will remove some coding as "wrong"
or will add coding that will disconnect special features. Spell checker will allow errors to be maintained even after a document has been spell checked. User must manually run spell checking
several times to ensure document has been properly examined. Several features are unnecessarily disabled unless the server side FrontPagetm extensions are present. Meta content control
requires you know the syntax requirements. Caution must be exercised as the coding produced is often too specific and are often not supported in many browsers that may be used by visitors.
For example, page widths are often automatically specifically coded for the user's system resolution and setup. (Few visitors have an identical system and setup.) Professional pages require
some expertise to be produced. Occasionally, this expertise requirement is significant. FrontPagetm likes things done its way. If you cannot or do not want to do it this way (to
allow a script or other feature to be used), it can make page maintenance very difficult. Local backup of sites can be difficult.
Good Points:
Very powerful and easy to learn. Meta content control is immediately available for editing. Generates image maps with minimal effort. Allows examination of download times, but at one assumed
speed only (28.8). CSS capability available right through menu selection process. Most features are readily available and easy to find. Most special codes such as the copyright symbol,
trademark, or super and subscripting are immediately available. If you know the Internet well, it is an excellent editor that can complement other efforts.
Overall:
Ideal for the person who likes Windows products and doesn't mind limiting themselves to that platform for themselves and their visitors. (Unless considerable expertise is used, it often leaves
many visitors using WebTV and AOL out). This is one of the easiest to use editors around. Unfortunately, it has some flaws in assumptions that often cause people to make errors that cost them
in visitors. An example is the many "themes." These are very attractive but have file sizes that are far too great for use (unless optimized) and tend to be too bold (they wash out
text). Another example is the disconnect of graphics and other features that it sometime will produce. Ideal for the those that don't want to learn an much amount about the Internet, are willing
to loses some visitors due to the long downloads, and don't plan to use many Internet commerce related software features.
Time to create page (excluding all graphics)-- 2.5-hours. An additional 1-hour was required to perform some manual text editing
that was required to make page work properly. File size 11k plus graphics equaling a 15-seccond load time for many.
